GOALS AND DREAMS - part one Why do we have problem with the word dream? When I was ten, I wanted to get a photographic camera. I didn't know, then, what a goal or dream or planning was. All I knew was, that if I had this camera, I could go around and take pictures of flowers, girls, cars or whatever. This was a pretty expensive camera. At that time it cost more than three months the average wage. For a ten year old boy it was an enormous sum of money, but I didn't see that. All I concentrated on was the camera. I knew everything about it. What speeds it had, what lens, that it had a special knife inside so you could take only three - four pictures and develop without spoiling the rest of the film. Anytime I passed a photographic shop, my nose was glued to the shop window. I must have driven my mother crazy. It took me one and half years to get that camera. When you were a teenager - did you manage to buy a car? Could you imagine yourself saying then, "How many miles a gallon does this car do?". It would be more like, "How fast can this car go?" The difference in your thinking happened because of the emotive wish. You start with the idea of what you would like to happen in your life. Then have you had this happen? You try to get ahead and something comes up and gets in the way, and you think this is only temporary; we get rid off this, and then get back to our main game. Did you have that feeling? The next thing you know you're getting married. Then somebody suggests that a sensible thing to do, would be to get rid of your car and put a deposit on a house. Finally, they invented a thing called "a friendly set of mortgage payments". In a while the house needs a bit of work on it, so you start the "friendly second mortgage". The motor breaks down, in that old station wagon that you bought, because it was a "sensible car". So you can have something called a "credit card". It's very easy, you can get as much money as you want. Then it's not a problem. Then of course you need the lawnmower to cut the lawns and then the gutter needs replacing. Not to mention also, that when couples of the opposite sex live together, in a house - it doesn't take much time and then look what happens - you become three, four or five people before you work out what's causing it. Then hospital fees come along and the car needs new tyres; then the rates come in and the insurance for the house. In a couple of years the school fees start coming in. And you think whatever happened to those years? Kids need new school uniforms, a car needs replacing; the lawnmower has broken down again; the plumbing in the backyard has broken down too; plumbers dig a huge hole; it costs you another $1000; tyres need replacing; the registration for the car comes in; insurance cover comes in, Medicare has to be paid, than someone comes into your life and says: "Have you got a dream?" I sort of knew what happens. I started off with the idea the way I wanted to live. At thirty five I was actually further away from my dream than at 17. In order to succeed, the training system is important. McDonald's is an example. How do you build it? Almost everybody has had a McDonald's hamburger. There's not too many who haven't. You remember when you used to go to the corner store and they produced hamburgers like you wouldn't believe. You got the biggest beetroot and bacon and eggs and cheese and you thought how I am going to eat this? You go to McDonald's and you get a sesame seed bun and pickle. And it doesn't matter where you go, that's it. But the key to McDonald's is in their training system. When you walk up to the kid behind the counter, and say, "I'll have a Big Mac, please" The kid replies, "Do you want a coke and french fries with that?" Do you know why they say that? Because three quarters of the population say, "I suppose so!". So they walk up to the Coke machine, take a fairly big cup, completely filling it up with ice and you wind up with the coke on top. "There's your coke." Then they take the fries packet and go to the fries machine. Have you ever looked at how McDonald's fries are presented? It's like a party hat, it's beautifully done, it spreads at the top, so when they put the chips in it looks like an optical illusion. But you can see it works; they've got the system that everybody can follow. Technology is the way to make things more efficient. It takes a lot more skill to sell an ice-making machine in the Sahara Desert today, when they can choose from a dozen different ice making machines, than three hundred years ago. You see, the technology makes the people's relationship more important. People who have people skills and can put other people at ease will win the game and get ahead. One of the most important skills, is to remember other people's names. To find out more about it, Click here. To create a relationship with other people is far more important than the use of technology. Technology makes it easier, which means, we don't know what to do without people. That's where the technology fits in. In today's world there is more opportunity than ever before. It is easier to reach your goal than before. An opportunity is the realization that a certain course of action, will give you a favorable change of circumstances. I have found out the better off people are, the less happy they are with their circumstances. Why? Because they looking to create more. It has to do with where you see yourself in the future. If you have no idea what I'll what you would like to change in your economic situation and this could include also your time, then you'll never see the opportunity. All you will see, is the work, which nobody wants to do. When you define your dream you know what you are looking at. If you don't, you go around, hoping fate will turn up and everything will just happen. Opportunity is internal, it is inside of us. You have two people, seeing the same thing; one sees the opportunity, and the other sees the work. Things can't become obvious until they exist. The funny thing is that the opposite is true; if you want to change anything, if you want to get anywhere, it has to start as an idea, as a goal, as a dream. Everything man has created, had to first be created in his head. If you want to go on a holiday, you have to think about it, plan it and visualize it. Even if you just drive to work in the morning, you know, beforehand, which way to go. Where to turn left or right, and you know approximately how long it will take you to get there. If you really want something, you will never quit, regardless of the obstacles on the way. Last month I was talking about persistence. Goals go hand in hand with persistence. Goals are actually dreams with the date on them. The date gives you the sense of urgency; it gives you the energy you need to achieve your goal. It also means you can and need to change your priorities and habits. To do something you don't like to do - in the short-term - with the knowledge and the vision to achieve your goal.
